A "mala" is a string of 108 beads used for prayer and meditation. The purpose of the Global Mala Project is to unite the global yoga community from every continent in the world, forming a "mala around the earth" through collective yoga practices based upon the sacred cycle of 108 on the same two days in 2007. See all the locations practicing yoga for charity worldwide on this Google map!
| Kansas City joins the Global Mala Project!
Our Global Mala event will be held at the Marriott Downtown. Friday night, September 21st, will be an amazing evening of kirtan, an ocean of OM Chant and meditation. On Saturday morning we'll go through the ritual journey of a yoga mala, 108 cycles of sun salutation as a moving prayer to initiate change and water seeds of benevolence for self and others. And DJ Shakti will rock the house with spontaneous music and dance. Our hope is to have as many participants as possible, to send out an unparalleled loving vibration from the Heartland and surprise the world with Kansas City's commitment to karma yoga.
You may have already seen ads for the Global Mala online, in Yoga Journal and Yoga + Healthy Living magazines. Now it's time for Kansas City yogis to rise up and meet the rest of the global yoga community in the spirit of karma yoga and taking our practice beyond the borders of our mats, style and studio. This will be an amazing celebration of this sacred path, of each other (your fellow yoga pilgrims!), and all the teachers who have loved it, believed in it and worked hard to keep it alive and accessible for us all.
On September 21 - 22, the Fall Equinox and the United Nations International Day of Peace, studios, teachers and students across the globe will create and participate in fundraising yoga celebrations, raising funds and awareness for some of the most essential issues of our times. The charity Kansas City Yoga Kula has chosen to support is YouthAIDS. This fantastic organization is doing so much to break the silence and complacency surrounding the AIDS pandemic as well as extensive work in the fields of education, prevention and life-saving treatment of HIV/AIDS in over 60 countries!
